Hidden away on the southern coast of Georgia is a quaint little historical island known as Jekyll Island. Jekyll Island sits with its family known as the Golden Isles. To travel to the island you must pass 6 miles of Georgia’s marsh lands and over a bridge towering over Jekyll Sound. Once on the island you pay a small fee to help with the upkeep of the island and help preserve the wildlife.

Jekyll Island has one of the top 10 most romantic beaches named by Travelocity and AOL Travel in 2004 located at the north point of the island known as Driftwood Beach. The beach is loaded with branches, trees, and as the title says, driftwood. It’s a very isolated beach that you can walk about a mile without seeing any other person. Just before sunset is a sight that you will cherish for many years to come. Pictures do not do this island justice, but you can see how quiet and beautiful it is.

Also, at the north end of the island is a fishing pier shaped as a Roman T. Many people fish and crab in the early morning or late afternoon during the cooler times of the day. You can catch bushels of crabs and have a fantastic dinner that same day staying in one of the many cottages to rent weekly. The best time of year to crab at Jekyll Island is in late June, early July. Just before you reach the pier you can bear right and take a friendly walk through a small pathway over a small walking bridge. Be careful after walking onto the other side of the bridge as you see thousands of little Fiddler Crabs running scared from you. Within the pier’s parking lot is a large grassy knoll where you can rent horses to ride the beaches surrounding the pier along with a nice horse stroll on Driftwood Beach.

On the island is 10 miles of walking beaches, mini golf, four golf courses, a water park, the Georgia Sea Turtle Center, and many more places and things to do. Jekyll Island is a beautiful island with little congestion of people even on season. Currently, Jekyll Island is being revitalized to stimulate the island’s recovery for more business.

There are plenty of places to stay on Jekyll Island, including hotels, condos, apartment, and homes. If you want to rough it they even have a campground to pull your camper into. The homes are fairly priced per week that range anywhere from $400 and up per week. They have 1 bedroom units to 5 bedroom units and maybe larger. Any place on the island is within riding distance to the beaches, shops, or restaurants. And the bike trails show you parts of the island that cannot be touched with commercial building. More than ten percent of the island cannot be built due to the historical landmarks and more importantly to protect the wildlife.

It is the most amazing place that I have ever been and when you get there you never want to leave. In fact, the whole time you are staying on the island you don’t have to. They have everything you need to enjoy a relaxing atmosphere and a fun nightlife. If you stay on the island in January and February, you have the chance to hunt for island treasure. During the winter months, Jekyll Island Authority will hide handmade glass globes around the island on the beach for you to find from dusk to dawn. There are tons and tons of things to do and if you stay only for a week you will not have time to do everything. Take a look at the links below to the official Jekyll Island sites.

This may not be like the Bahamas or another extravagant beach resort, but there is something about it that keeps you wanting more. If you ever have the chance to visit, you should. Also, be sure to visit the Georgia Sea Turtle Center to help save the sea turtles.

Welcome to HubPages MarleyOz, and thanks for sharing this great information.

My husband and I were blessed to visit Jekyll island during the winter season for a few days. Just walking the beach at sunset was, as you say, an amazing experience due to the driftwood, solitude and colorful sky. There was also much to learn about the fascinating history of the island as wealthy tycoons used to spend their summers in an enclave of beautiful cottages and the Federal Reserve was supposedly started on Jekyll island in a private meeting.

Thank you. My parents started taking me there in the 80's and I have been going every couple years since. I just recently took my wife and she loved it too.
